It doesn't feel like the little battle system that sprung out of BS: Factions was originally intended to scale to this magnitude. Be it the caps of regular stats, or something completely new. I really think that the stat caps of the heroes should be increased in order to not rely too much on Talent Ranks, as well as to differentiate the various promoted classes. For example, assuming the progression system remains the same, Tryggvi and Ludin are 100% guaranteed to be exactly identical by level 15, no matter how the player prioritizes stats or Talent Ranks. But assuming that characters are going to reach level 15 in BS3, we are approaching a point where a majority of promoted classes converge towards the same abilities and the same stats. Would it really feel fair to win because your characters avoided armor damage 44% of the time?ĭo Talent Ranks allow for more build diversity? Initially, yes. Also, these numbers get nuts at higher ranks. Those percentages are not at all noticeable through the battle interface, and often times do not urge the player to make new strategic choices. Essentially, it makes it impossible to "figure out" the battle system which narrows the gap between beginners and experts.ĭo Talent Ranks make the player feel powerful? Hard to generalize, but I'd say most likely not. However, randomness serves an important purpose: It makes the game more forgiving and accessible to casual players, as they don't have to make perfect strategic decisions in every turn. I've heard complaints on how Talent Ranks lessen the experience by throwing randomness into the mix. I'm not gonna be discussing whether Talent Ranks are balanced or not, but rather how they interplay with the above two points. That being said, the average player is probably only gonna get a handful of characters to level 10, and also spend a couple of points on. In this game, all characters except Ro'Ech, Scathach, Egil, Gunnulf and Canary (thanks Aleonymous) are able to reach their maximum stats by level 10. Should Rook be a high STR sniper or a guy who runs around the battlefield helping others score kills? You decide. No characters in BS1 are able to max out all of their stats even if they reach level 5, forcing the player to prioritize and figure out what purpose each and every one of them serves on the battlefield. The game has a bunch of classes and promoted classes which play slightly differently, not only because of their abilities, but also because of their stats.

When combined with Sigjorn's +2 movement which is equipped at the start of the battle, the player is allowed to try something completely new: A Warhawk who is able to run right past the enemy frontlines and target ranged units who are "safely" tucked away. Sigbjorn has less brute strength, but has instead maxed an often overlooked stat: Exertion. is a copy of Gunnulf? Does he play exactly like Gunnulf too? Nope. The game suddenly gives you this level 5 monster who. I think that the most clever way of demonstrating this is the introduction of Sigbjorn. But this is not much of a problem because of how the characters' advantages and disadvantages aren't just defined by their active ability. The number of playable classes in The Banner Saga is not huge.
